PIB® The original SIB

The Gerda PIB® (Premises Information Box) is Gerda’s original name for a secure information box, a solution the company developed over 20 years ago in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Service. Now widely adopted across the industry, secure information box has become the generic term, while PIB® remains Gerda’s recognised product name. Designed to provide rapid access to critical building plans and premises information during an incident, the PIB® was developed alongside firefighters to exacting operational specifications and is a recognised focal point for emergency response. The Premises Information Box operates without reliance on power, personnel, or Wi-Fi, ensuring constant availability.

The Gerda PIB® system is suitable for a wide range of applications across multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, transport, infrastructure, listed buildings, places of assembly, offices and retail premises, factories and warehouses, and heritage buildings. Gerda offers a range of secure information boxes to suit different building types and operational requirements, supporting improved fire safety, emergency planning, and regulatory compliance.

What is the difference between a PIB or a SIB?

They’re the same, PIB® (Premises Information Boxes) is the original Gerda name for a secure facility to store information about a building for use by the fire service during an incident, which is now also know by the generic term secure information box (SIB).

PIB® are referred to in the initial Grenfell Tower Inquiry and FIA/NFCC Code of Practice (for the provision of Premises Information Boxes in Residential Buildings) with the regulations simply referring to secure information boxes (now termed SIB).

With a Gerda PIB® you’re installing the SIB originally developed with the fire and rescue service.

The PIB® History

The PIB®, was developed in 2005 as an initiative with Gerda Security and operational and fire engineering departments of the fire and rescue service.

Specifically designed to hold A3 laminated plans as part of the ERP (Emergency Response Pack) by firefighters wearing protective gloves and able to be passed round as needs dictate. The PIB® with its ERP plans can be used in adverse weather conditions, without the use of electrical power or internet/Wi-Fi.

Fire Safety (England) 2022 Regulations stipulate the need for a secure information box in high rise residential buildings and reference the Fire Industry Association and National Fire Chiefs Council Code of Practice.

Gerda Security Products offer a range of SIBs – Secure PIB® Systems, to suit applications with pricing starting from low hundreds to the high security PIB’s®, successfully having achieved the demanding security standard required [STS 205 BR2] at the top end of the range.
